Density
|
In regard to ink, the relative thickness of the layer of printed ink. Also known as Ink Density.

Density Range
|
The range from the smallest highlight dot to the largest shadow dot.

Die
|
Hand built device used for cutting, scoring, stamping, embossing or debossing.

Die Cutting
|
The use of sharp steel rules to cut special shapes from printed sheets.

|
Dot Gain
|
Enlargement of the halftone dot between plate and print, which is assessed and compensated for in reproduction.

|
Double Hit
|
Printing a single plate twice (usually black) so it has two layers of ink, usually used to make darker blacks when running a 2-color print job instead of using 4 process colors to make a rich black.

DPI
|
"Dots Per Inch". The number of dots that fit horizontally and vertically into a one inch area. A general rule, the higher the DPI, the sharper the printed image.

Drawdown
|
A on-press test of ink color on actual paper stock that will be used for the job to evaluate how it will look.

Dry Back
|
Printed ink colors becoming less dense or vivid as the ink dries.
|
|
Dry Trap
|
Printing over dry ink with a separate pass on the press.
|
|
Dummy
|
A sample of a proposed job made up with actual materials, cut to correct size to show bulk, weight, style and binding. It is also a complete layout of a job showing position of images and type, illustrations, page order, etc.

Duotone
|
Reproduction of a black and white image in two colors, usually black and another color. One color usually is assigned to the highlight areas while the other stresses shadows.
